NEVER BUY A WATER HEATER WITH THIS HONEYWELL CONTROL.

This is day 2 without hot water.  Tried all the internet tricks with no luck.  Hopefully I can get a service tech tomorrow.

My water heater came with the house. I’m pretty sure it was made in the early  70s. It’s reliable for the 15 minutes of hot water that it’s capable of putting out.

Yup. Sold them for two and a half years. They are absolute garbage. If you have already determined it’s not the thermo couple,   You’ll have to buy a new controller . If it’s the one that doesn’t have the thermo couple separate you will have to buy a replacement co troller. IIRC

Can you pick one up at your local plumbing shop? Just like VW the trade supply stores usually have 10 of any part known to fail in stock. Online it looks like $110 shipped.

Also, how old is the unit. You should probably change the sacrificial aluminum or magnesium rod every couple of years ( I switched to magnesium this year).

purchased june 2015. while it’s tempting to buy another control unit, why waste $110+ for one item when I can pay $100 to a home warranty service to fix anything and ever ything that is wrong?

don’t they pretty much all come with that?  my water heater was installed in 2012 and the controller looks like that.  are there specific models/date codes that are suspect?

Small price to pay. It won’t die, and I won’t replace it until it does (unlike the furnace, which I’m pretty sure was a literal ticking time bomb).

Trust me. There were a lot of things that I didn’t feel right about in that job. Constantly being pushed to be dishonest. It was a battle between serving the customers and the corporate. If you served one to the best of your ability other one hated you. Always the fall guy for everything, because customers are “always right” and so are managers. The real reason I quit and went back to school (beyond what I told everyone around me) was that it got so bad I was questioning life daily. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not blaming “big corporate” for my mental instabilities at the time but it helped me see that sales wasn’t the right place for me. Thankfully I have a whole  different perspective on life, 2 years down the road from that.

oh.  In that case I guess one hopes the part is discontinued and they have to replace the whole water heater :)

Dude, you’re freaking me out! I came home to a house that smells vaguely of natural gas today, checked the water heater and saw that exact controller  on mine, then I see your article! Creepy shit, man!

I’m working as a Millwright and pretty much any Honeywell controls we’ve had for anything (heaters, thermostats, water, blowers, etc) have all crapped out within a year or two . Changed them out for other industrial brands and no more problems. Or at least not in that kind of timespan.

I'm not trying to jinx anyone but unfortunately, it's a known issue.  Google it, if you dare.

I had the same on my old Bradford white water heater.  It has the anti something safety feature that would allow it to drop the pilot light off every so often....  super annoying.  But it would fire right back up.  Now we’re electric.  No more of that noise.  Cold showers suck.
